Severance Pay Ceiling Rises: Good News for Workers in the New Year

Eurasian Projects 04 January, 2024

Along with the salary increases of civil servants, there is a significant increase in the severance pay ceiling! This increase of 49.25 percent will offer more advantages to workers. So, how will this new severance ceiling be implemented? Here are the details!

1. Severance Pay Ceiling and Salary Increases:

Ahmet Kıvanç from Habertürk wrote about the new severance pay ceiling. The severance pay applied to civil servants working for the Republic of Turkey is paid over the last gross wage of the worker. However, regardless of the wage of the worker, the severance pay to be paid cannot exceed a certain ceiling. This ceiling is set depending on the pension given to the highest civil servant. In January and July, the severance pay ceiling increases.

2. New Severance Ceiling:

The severance pay ceiling, which was applied in the July-December period of last year, will increase to 35,058.58 TL as of January 1. After deducting the stamp duty, the net payment will be 34,792.49 TL.

3. Impact on Workers:

This increase will affect workers whose gross wage is above 23 thousand 489 liras and who are entitled to receive severance pay in the January-June period. For example, a worker who works with a gross wage of 40 thousand TL and has 10 years of service in his last workplace would have been able to receive 234 thousand 898 TL severance pay if he had left his job before December 31, 2023. If the same worker quits in January, he will receive 350,585 TL severance pay. In other words, the amount of severance pay he can receive will increase by 115 thousand 687 liras.

4. Severance Pay of Minimum Wage Workers:

The severance pay of minimum wage workers has also increased depending on the minimum wage. The amount of severance pay that a minimum wage worker can receive for a year of service, which was 13,414.50 TL in December, increased to 20,002.50 TL as of January 1. However, severance pay is paid on the basis of the worker's last wage, so workers need to be careful."*
